Chapter 6
âThank you,â I said to Travis as I handed him back his phone. âWei said sheâll be here within the hour.â
âWe still need to look at that wound,â Travis said, placing a black leather bag on the floor.
âDo we really?â I asked. âOnce this bastard thing is off, Iâll be able to heal. Unfortunately, I need a keyâ
âDid your friend say she had a key?â
I shook my head. âNo, she didnât.â
âSo, it could be a while.â
I nodded. âIt could be, yes.â I sighed, resigned to what was to come.
Travis got me to lie down then removed the bandages from my side. âAt first glance, this looks okay,â he said. âThrough and through, no serious damage to organs from where itâs hit, but something is off.â
âFor the last few minutes I havenât been able to smell anything,â I said. âThat seems bad.â
âCan you usually smell anything?â
âIâm still part fox, so yes. My sense of smell is excellent, better than most dogs. Itâs what I used to find your cabin, but I couldnât differentiate the scents. At the time, I thought it was just the shock of what had happened, but when you and Mary turned up, I could smell you both, smell your fear and apprehension. Smell Maryâs excitement. Since then my sense of smell is lessening. Iâm not sure itâs shock.â In all honestly, I was terrified it was something much more serious, and was one of the reasons I hadnât been keen on Travis looking at it. Getting the band off was the priority, but it probably wouldnât help much if I was dead before that happened.
âThereâs some kind of silver fluid leaking out of the holes,â Travis said. âLooks like molten quicksilver.â
I shrugged. âNo idea,â I said between clenched teeth. âSome kind of witch bullshit, I imagine.â Iâd been shot with a silver bullet before, I knew the pain it caused, and this wasnât like that. It was like a gradual shutting down of my senses. The sorcererâs band didnât do that, at least none Iâd ever worn before had done that, and Iâd seen people draw runes on bullets to cause extra suffering to their victims, so it wasnât outside of the realm of possibility.
âI need this thing off me, and Iâll be fine,â I said. âI just need to not die before then.â
I felt a slight jab near the wound.
âLocal anesthetic,â Travis said. âShould stop this part from hurting too much.â
âWhat part?â I asked.
âI have to clean this wound. It has bits of tree and dirt in it. And then I have to sew it. None of that is going to feel good.â
âLucky me,â I said and took a deep breath. âI hope you have sterile tools.â
Travis nodded. âIâm going to go wash up again, and then weâll get you done.â
I remained motionless while Travis left the room, Mary remaining behind.
âIt looks bad,â she said.
âYou do not have a great bedside manner,â I told her with a smile.
âWill you be okay?â
I nodded. âHad worse.â
âReally?â
Another nod. âI jumped off a cliff only a few hours ago.
